Hey there, everybody. I intend to complete a TEFL course in Prague in the next few months and comparing airfares online is driving me bonkers. I'm hoping somebody with some experience will be able to answer a couple of things:

1) Is there a cheaper way to do it than to fly straight to the Czech Republic (with the included layovers, obviously), eg. flying to Italy and continuing by train?

2) Is it best practice, and more economical, presuming you don't have a specific return date in mind, to buy a one-way ticket or to buy return and wear whatever fees may be incurred due to later changes?

Cheers,
Sam.

You can probably get a cheaper flight into a major hub like London or Frankfurt then fly to Prague on a low cost carrier.

2 1-way tickets are usually much more than a return. I'd probably check the change date fee on the returns just to make sure it is less with this included.

Where are your flying from?

Personally, the cheapest way I found was to fly to Vienna and then catch a Student Agency bus to Prague. (I flew from Nth Qld originally)

Agree.

EDIT:
Just checked and it was $200 cheaper to fly return Sydney-Vienna than Sydney-Prague. A bust ticket from Vienna to Prague is about $22 one-way (all in AUD).

EDIT2:
Even cheaper Sydney-Frankfurt return - an extra $300 saving on Sydney-Vienna! Bus ticket Frankfurt-Prague is about $79 one-way.

Thanks heaps. I'll be flying out of Melbourne and will definitely check out the Vienna possibility.

Yeah, you have to look to where the flight routes are competitive; there won't be all that many different airlines flying between transit hubs (eg, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Dubai) and Prague, but there will be between those places and, say, London and Frankfurt.

So look for a cheap ticket that will get you to anywhere in Europe, and then either book a flight from there to Prague with a budget airline, or see if your carrier includes an onward flight to Prague with a partner airline.

I second this. Depends on how much you want to bring though. Low cost carriers usually have lower luggage allowances.

I think flying into a hub city as well. Using an airline that will fly into Prague but stops via one of the major European Cities. The good thing about this is you can have stopovers in each direction one your way to/from Prague.

As for the tickets, it really depends on how long you're thinking of staying and how long your ticket expiry is. If you plan on staying under 12 months then I would suggest getting a return and pay the amendment fees (keep in mind that you will also have to pay any increase in tax or fuel as well). Generally this would still work out cheaper than buying 2x one way tickets.

If you plan on staying over 12 months I would suggest looking for a valid 24month ticket (most major airlines have these) where they allow a change in date.

Be careful about going over the 24 months (or whatever the ticket validity is for) because if you go over it you will loose your flight and will end up paying for a one way.

One way tickets can be more flexible though, as you can decide when to leave and where from but they generally add up costing more.
