www.passports.gov.au (http://www.passports.gov.au) has a heap of info to do with how to get or upgrade your passport.

Turns out i need to do a whole new application as my current pasport is still from when i was a minor, so i need to apply for an adult one now.

Received my new passport a couple weeks ago, all a very easy process. Now its an adult passport i only need to renew it every ten years.

Just another note. If you are planning on travelling, make sure you get your passport organised early, as it costs more to get it processed if you leave it until within six weeks before you travel.

I hold another passport aside from an Aus one, and their process is even easier to update. Just take some money, your current passport, and new photos into the embassy and thats done :)

Yes, pays to be prepared with passports, and make sure they are valid for the length of your trip. And Visas!

Losing passports or having them stolen is the biggest pain in the bum. My wife and I had both ours stolen in Mendoza, Argentina and were due to fly back to Peru in 3 days. Had to go back to BA earlier than expected and rush through the process for an emerency one. VERY lucky the staff at the embassy were helpful. In fact, amazingly helpful!

The number one rule here is never let it lapse. Some people who think they may not travel in the next couple of years will let it lapse, thinking they will save a little money and apply for a new passport down the track.

It is MUCH harder to get a new passport then to get an existing one renewed. The amount of extra paperwork and time spent can be quite frustrating, because they are very particular these days about every detail on the form being correct - even down to whether you use blue or black pen!

If you have an existing passport, just keep renewing it - you will save yourself so much hassle.
