Could this be a major pandemic? Or an isolated case before humans build up resistance?

Sounds a lot like bird flu at the start, lots of panic about the unkown. I dont know whats going to happen but lots of people think they do...

Lots of various news stories and the conspiracy theorists are loving it...

Various theories about the swine flu being manufactured and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Association) coffins that are placed around the USA being in anticipation of this 'event'.

Im open minded and know its out of my control. I'll post links after work.

ALL flights into Australia from North or South America will have to report any passengers with flu-like symptoms before the aircraft is allowed to land.

Some benefits to living on a big island... Although how do they determine who is showing symptoms?

According to news.com.au up to 300 Aussies may have contracted it. Some are now in isolation waiting for tests and new screening measures will be implemented at airports.

The World Health Organisation has also upgraded the pandemic risk, meaning a lot of other countries are going to be on a higher alert.

Watching with interest....

Millions of people get the flu each year and hundreds of thousands die from it.

At this time, the severe untreated cases have resulted in death around Mexico City, but otherwise it's a furffy.

Seems you are right so far Kennas. The media hype is slowly dying down over it, although im sure gov officials are still keeping a close eye on it all

A leading West Australian virologist says it is possible the Mexican outbreak of swine flu could be a different strain to the virus detected in the United States.
More than 150 people in Mexico have died from the virus while there have been no fatalities in the US.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/04/29/2555544.htm?section=australia

I think that there will be a lot of people presenting with 'normal' flu symptoms that are just being cautious. That was probably what killed a lot of the people in Mexico, they didnt know it was any different. But now everyone is aware it should be easier to keep under control imo.

A 23-month-old child has died of swine flu in Texas, the first confirmed death in the United States as well as the first outside Mexico, the Centres for Disease Control said.
There are 63 confirmed cases of swine flu in the US.
More information on the child's death to come shortly.

Two aussies now in isolation in London after being confirmed cases.

While it may be spreading, to me it doesnt appear to be spreading super quickly and now people are aware of it and getting diagnosed early there seem to be very few deaths from it.

I agree with Kennas the the World Health Organistaion are loving the attention though.. media whores

THE Federal Government has admitted it is about to replace 1.9 million doses of anti-flu vaccines because the drugs will soon be out of date.

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,25419362-421,00.html

Are flu shots still effective once they are out of date? Are they like milk or canned food im wondering? IE - is the date just on there or is it actually important?

Seems the media is now beginning to admit they were being sensationalist, which is their job unfortunately. No loger there to report news, but to create the biggest headline:

FEDERAL Health Minister Nicola Roxon has warned against complacency on the swine flu outbreak, as Australia remains clear of the disease and the Mexico death toll has been downgraded.
A total of 413 Australians have been tested for the disease since last week's outbreak.
Of those 337 have been cleared and the rest are awaiting test results, Ms Roxon said.
As the disease spreads around the world, the death toll in Mexico has been downgraded from over 100 to just 19.

This is a 100% furffy!

WHO will be absolutely smashed over this. Many will lose their jobs. It's caused untold economic damage and those who cried wolf should pay up!

2000 people who arrived back in Aus on the cruise ship Pacific Dawn (or Pacific Sun, I cant remember), have been asked to quarantine themselves for a week after 2 passengers tested positive.

My question is who pays these people of lost work or study etc?

50 confirmed swine flu cases now in Australia.

Travel insurance companies are also saying that they will not cover people who contract the disease overseas. What's the point of having insurance then???

I would not be at all surprised if World Nomads renegs on a claim for anything. We recently had a claim rejected after been caught up in a professional scam in Argentina. I'll be changing to another insurance company after this runs out.

The media is now reporting that some crew members of the Pacific Dawn cruise ship may have swine flu and that the boat may be quarantined.

Also some Qantas crew members are being tested for the H1N1 virus after coming in contact with others who have had it.

Three crew members of the Pacific Dawn confirmed as having the swine flu virus. This probably wont be good for P&O's publicity

The Pacific Dawn has been ordered to turn around from Airlie Beach and return to Brisbane. So i assume when the passengers disembark they will have to stay at home for a week for quarantine...

The strain of this flu in Australia doesn't seem to kill anyone.

The money that this is costing the economy, and hassle for individuals must be incredible.

Maybe I am underestimating the potential flow on effects.

BUT GET A GRIP!!!!

Now 215 confirmed swine flu cases in Australia and over 15000 worldwide.

Some passengers from the Pacific Dawn have been allowed to disembark in Brisbane but have been asked to isolate themselves for a week.

Victorian authorities are considering closing all schools for a week to help stop the spread of the H1N1 virus

Australia has recorded two swine flu deaths and confirmed cases well over 2000. The media has stopped talking about it now that they seem to have figured out that it is just the same as a 'normal' flu

What i would be interested in is how many people have died from other influenze starins in the same time period
