Hi
We are planning to spend Xmas in the Boston "sunshine", hopefully with a stopover somewhere in each direction, shortly after the birth of a grandchild. It seems we've missed the discounted economy fares that were available.
If anyone has any information or suggestions on fares / routes that may be available then I'd be grateful to learn of them.
We live in Perth but posibly could use Sydney as a point of departure and return.
With thanks
Rick
PS __ Looking at leaving Perth in the first week of December and leaving Boston around December 27.

Hi Rick,

Welcome to ATF :)

Hopefully chrissy will be able to get some spare time and give you a rough idea of the prices or an idea of where to look, as she is a travel agent :)

My understanding of xmas travel is the sooner it is booked the better, because if you leave it till the last minute you are relying on cancellations which may not happen.

Thanks Prawn - Yes I am trying to sort it asap. All advice appreciated.
Rick

hey Rick,

i just had a rough look and there is still a few options for you (but the availability is going pretty quickly!).

you can get an American Airlines flight out of Perth which would go via Tokyo if you wanted a stopover there. the prices would be sitting around the $2000-$2500 mark depending on the seat availability.

Another option is north west who would again bring you through Tokyo, that option is there if there is no availability with American Airlines.

You could also go with Cathay Pacific (via Hong Kong) or Air New Zealand (via Auckland), these 2 options would be quite a bit more expensive though, looking at $3000-3500.

From Sydney, you would have those options plus China Airlines which would take you through Taipei at about $2000-2500 and Air Canada which would sit around $3500.

I hope this has helped! let me know if you have anymore questions!

Cheers.

That's a great help Chrissy. Thanks enormously. Is it possible to have a stopover with any or all of these in both directions?
Best wishes

Rick

As far as i'm aware Rick, most flights always stop in their 'hub city'. Thats to say the city/country where the airline originates from.

So i would assume that these stops would be in both directions, but probably best to wait for Chrissy to confirm for 100% accuracy, as i could be wrong

On the other hand, given some of these fares, and if we want stopovers -- maybe a Qantas round-the-world? Make any sense?

Hey rick,

With round the world fares you need to travel in the same direction the whole time (which isnt normally a problem). Although i know that Lufthansa offer good deals with multi-stops. As far as im aware most round the world fares start at about $3k. (The Lufthansa ones can be cheaper)

If your looking at this sort of detail its probably best to contact a travel agent and see what they can do for you. Alternatively you could jump online and try and find prices there, but im not sure how comfotable you would be booking a round the world fare by yourself.

Dont forget to also purchase travel insurance :)

Hi rick.

I spoke with Chrissy (she is busy at the moment) and she says that most of the fares she mentioned can have stops in both directions (on the way there and the return flights), but each flight varies so its really dependent on what one you end up booking

Hope that helps a bit

Thanks Prawn -- I've been making progress! Nothing confirmed yet but the help is appreciated.

Actually now looking at flying to Fiji for a stopover. Deal [air Pacific] including accommodation plus return air fares to LA is pretty good. Will have to pick up an internal flight to Boston but that shouldn't be hard.
Have never been to Fiji however. Looking at 4 nights on the way there and 2 coming back. One suggestion has been the Sonaisali Island Resort [fairly close to Nadi] but other thoughts welcome.
Thanks again.

I suspect Kennas likes a bit more "activity" than I do Prawn....... Prefer somewhere quiet.

Thought I'd let you know the outcome. [And many thanks for the comments].
We ended up with a fair fare -- with a stopover in each direction - via Fiji. Bit of sunshine before the snowshine...... although the trip is not quite what we set out to do:
Perth - Nadi return $1680pp including 6 nights at a 4 star hotel - [4 nights on way to US and 2 on way back];
Nadi - LA return $1350 pp.
Waiting on some internal airlines to set up their Decemeber schedules before doing the LA - Boston return leg.
There were some better fares but via places we didn't particularly want to go to in the northern winter -- Tokyo, Paris, Sweden among them.
Thanks again.

For those long flights I always check if virgin or other has premium economy..worth the extra 500 bucks...

I guess it depends on where you are going but I've usually found premium economy to be about twice the fare of standard economy. Unfortunately this just doesn't seem worth it!
