AUSTRALIAN cities occupy five of the top 20 places in a British survey ranking the liveability of 140 of the world's major centres.
Melbourne ranked third in the world, behind Vancouver in Canada and the Austrian city of Vienna in the Economist Intelligence Unit's 2009 Liveability survey.

What i want to know is who compiles these lists and how they go about deciding?

Sure must be tough visiting the top 10 to make the final decison ;)

That's great darts for old Melbs! :) I think Sydney topped us last year.

Agree with Vancouver, great city.

Couldn't go too far past Harare for the worst. Maybe Baghdad, or whatever the capital of Somalia is this week.

Yeh i actually watched a travel show about Vancouver yesterday, it does look pretty nice. Cold though, but i guess most places are like that in the Northern Hemisphere

I agree too Vancouver is an awesome city - lived there for a few months and then went west a bit and spent a ski season in Whistler - definately recommended if you haven't been its beautiful. However Melbourne is also a pretty good city and I'm not suprised its high on the list

The Economist Intelligence Unit's livability uses data from the Mercer consulting group and shows cities in Canada, Australia, Austria, Finland and New Zealand as the ideal destinations thanks to a widespread availability of goods and services, low personal risk and an effective infrastructure.

Any particular season to travel to Singapore?

For me, I prefer to be there during the festive times like the New Lunar Year - very very lively!

Darwin is the only Aussie city to make it in. It's an interesting list! I guess top cities to visit is different to top cities to live in?

Sorry that is top 10 cities not top 10 citizens! Although that would also be an interesting list!

Though Sydney Australia has many attractions, Sydney residents might have a specific views about their city in terms of its livability.
