Canada is a country occupying most of northern North America, extending from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean. It is the world's second largest country by total area, and shares land borders with the United States to the south and northwest.
The land occupied by Canada was inhabited for millennia by various aboriginal peoples. Beginning in the late 15th century, British and French expeditions explored and later settled the Atlantic coast. France ceded nearly all of its colonies in North America in 1763 after the Seven Years' War. In 1867, with the union of three British North American colonies through Confederation, Canada was formed as a federal dominion of four provinces. This began an accretion of additional provinces and territories and a process of increasing autonomy from the United Kingdom, highlighted by the Statute of Westminster in 1931, and culminating in the Canada Act in 1982 which severed the vestiges of legal dependence on the British parliament.

Hey guys, I just have an enquiry. I applied for a Canadian working visa in Feb this year as I was applying to work over there this ski season. However, my job fell through but I still want to go travelling in Canada and the USA in the coming year. I'd prefer to go in May so that I can be there during the summer but if I don't activate my Canadian visa by Feb 23rd I lose it altogether.
My questions are:
What's the work situation over ther at the moment?
Will I be able to pick up work pretty easily or is it worth just losng the visa and simply travelling come May? I'm on somewhat of a budget too, about $10,000.
Do you think if I were to go early it would swallow up all my funds come May/June?
Let me know what you all think. Thanks!
Jess

What ski resort are you thinking of hitting. I have spent time in Whistler the last couple of years. If you are an Aussie you are able to get as many work visa's until you are 30, oh and they last for two years. My twin brother is arriving in Whistler on the 26th. If it's Whistler that you are interested in then i'll ask my brother what the job situation is.

Just out of curiosity can anybody tell me how long (in hours) it would roughly take to travel by plane from the south of Australia to the far east of Canada?

Well Sydney to Los Angeles is about 16 hrs. So add in another couple, Adelaide to Sydney and that puts you at 18hrs to get to LA.
I have no idea how long it takes from LA to Canada though :o

LA to Montreal/Quebec is 7-9 hrs I think. To Halifax in Nova Scotia 9-11 hrs.
Haven't been to that side of Canada yet, but would like to.
Little brother was an exchange student on Price Edward Island for a year and really enjoyed it. Pretty bloody cold though!!

Yeah. The cold and the snow was why I left back in 95. The 94/95 winter we had a cold snap in Toronto (-60C plus wind chill), then 5-6 months later we had a heat wave (+40C). My wife left me, and I thought to myself "F*ck staying thru another winter here". Don't get me wrong though. I like visiting the snow, just not living in it.......... It gets very depressing... The Ice Hockey is very good though (dare I say better than Aussie Rules)
Though the cottage country in Ontario is beautiful and the petroglyphs are pretty cool (about 2-3 hours E-N-E from Toronto if I remember correctly)

The weather here in Montreal is not bad. Just snowing off and on.
Working condition is a bit tough. Its hard to find a job with with a excellent pay. But you will find work, that is guaranteed!

Hi Ant,
Welcome to ATF :)
I know a few people that did working holidays in Canada as the culture and people are very similar to Australia as far as I am aware.
I'm not sure about the visa side of things, but i do know a lot of Aussie pick up work in the Ski resorts such as Whistler etc, so that may be a starting point for you :)

I'm planning on travelling from Toronto to Calgary for the Calgary Stampede then will continue onto do the Candian Rockies and on to Vancouver... any suggestions on the cheapest way to do this? Once I finish up in Van I have to head back to Toronto again as well.
Was thinking by Train would be the way to go but would love to hear from others who have done something similar and their experiences.
Cheers,
Nadine :)
