We are considering taking 6 months (minimum) off within the next few years and just travelling. Want to experience places like Cambodia, Vietnam, Loas, India, Middle East, South America. A lot of the 'cheaper' (currency wise) destinations.

Obviously its different for everyone, but what would some of our more experienced members suggest as a dollar amount that would be needed per week or per month?

By the time we are looking to do it we could probably have $20k AUD minumum. Personally i think this would be heaps, but just seeking others input.

$20k for 2 people could be marginl if you move around alot? or is that for living expenses only, ie airfares extra? because australia to thailand will set you back 2k return (for 2) then depending how much you move around, like asia to south americas, the cost will quickly add up.

i guess as far as living expenses in those cheaper countries $3000/month or $18k(for 6months) sounds about right.

$3000/month is $100/day. the hotel/accomodation will be the best part of you daily expenses. long term rates will save u a bit, so really depends if you will stay in one country/town long enough to save on long term rates.

$50 would be a good starting point, not a slum, but not a 5star place. that leaves $50/day for food and entertainment(for 2), or $25each. breakfast will be cheap or included with accomodation.

lunch/dinner $20 for the 2 of you. leaving $30 for transport, shopping, entertainment. just $15 each.

Firstly, you'll save quite a bit on accommodation travelling as a couple. Many countries charge by the room, not by the bed, so your accommodation bill can be halved in many places.

Second, does depend a great deal on where you travel exactly and for how long.

When budgetting think of some of the big ticket items you might spend money on along the way. On one trip I did a Divemaster course in Honduras (USD$500) and bought a dive computer ($US600) unbudgeted for.

Have you bought the latest Loney Planets yet? Not a bad guide, but probably need to add 10%.

I spent $40k in my one year around-the-world jaunt in 2005, but I did it pretty comfortably, and did anything I wanted.

Add in Central America for cheaper places to visit. A hotel room on the Island of Utila off the coast of Honduras is $4 a night and a 10 dive package $150. Unbeatable value.
