I want to go on a trip to Africa this summer, to uncover some more about my family history, something under $500...But I wanna stay away from war, and human traffickers. Any suggestions? Obviously, I have to be aware WHEREVER I go...But in general...Where's there safe travel

Are we talking $500 after flights?
South Africa is generally the most Westernised and 'safe' country, but even it has its areas you wouldn't want to visit...

Kenya would probably be OK if you go on a tour.
Agree with South Africa, but they are still having lots of problems in Joburg I think. Cape Town and Durban are probably fine.
$500 doesn't sound like much to be allocating to a trip though..

Interesting Fact: Africa is the only continent with parts in the north, south, east, and west hemispheres. There you go, you learn something new everyday. :p
I've never travelled personally but i've asked friends who have and they've said it largely depends on what country you're eyeing and most importantly - what is your business there? A lot of visitors travelling into the northern regions are there for humanitarian/volunteer work or spokespeople on behalf of greedy Amercian corporations.
Obviously Sudan, the Congo, Liberia and Angola are out of the question as they're all in the middle of harsh civil wars. Apparently Tanzania is THE spot if you want to go on a traditional safari. I've also heard nice things about Ghana. Beware of Nigeria however, it's a hotbed for human trafficking and if you have a young, white family I would think twice about exploring the slums.

I travel regularly to Morocco and it is a very safe place to travel. I am happy to answer any questions you might have.

Well live in Cape Town surrounds, and the news the other countries get on us seems rather out of context, all in all a great place to live and definitively safe to visit.

Like EverNothing said, Africa is a massive contintent, so if you are trying to look up family history and reconnect with your roots, you may need to be a little bit more specific. I don't know an awful lot about travelling in Africa, although Morocco and Egypt sound like pretty good places to visit. Had good friends visit Namibia and also recommended the place.
Of course you will need to keep your wits about you in some countries. But I think you will need to save a little bit more than $500 unfortunately.
