Tell us your favourite international dish...

Hi everyone!

my names Christine and i'm a travel agent in Adelaide so i'm more then happy to try and answer any questions anyone might have.

now, i'm a huge lover of food and i think my favourite international dish is the peking duck i had in Singapore. It was at a place called Min Jiang at Rochester park. We had it in 3 traditional ways and one of them was quite interesting. They told us to dip the crispy duck skin in white sugar and eat it just like that! it sounds strange but i have to say, the taste infusion, the contrasting textures, it was all just amazing!

so far, the worst dish i have had was in Vanuatu. i really should have been able to tell it was bad by the smell and look of it but i'm one of those people... i just have to try it! It was called Lap Lap and you'll be able to find it in any markets in Port Villa, just ask the locals. It's made up of a base of yam and banana toped with spinach and a chicken wing. to top it off it was steamed in a banana leaf! i couldn't comprehend that something could be that gross!

anyway,

i hope this helps you in your travels!

chrissy.

One of my favourite 'local' foods, unique to an area is the raw fish dish marinated in lime and coconut that the Fijians do. Forgotten the name for now. Unique to the Melanesians and is sensational.

Can't go past real Indian or Thai food. The flavours are just mind blowing.

Worst food, maybe spiders and crickets in Vietnam and Cambodia. I mean, WTF!!

Then probably Cuy (Guinea Pig) in the Andes. Eeeeek!

Then od course there is pizza and red wine!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Bao Zi (BOW ZEH), or steamed buns are my favorite food here in the North of China. They make a mushroom bun at the food court in the local shopping centre that is just divine! The pork buns are nice too. Very food safe too, steaming helps them reach high internal temperatures. I would like to take this idea back to Australia one day and have a Bao Zi and Pie shop.

Also, spring pancakes, they're like an enchilada but with Chinese vegetables and meats, very yummy!

Cheers,

CanOz

Are they the seet bread type of buns Canoz? No matter how much i travel through Asia, I just cant seem to get to like the way they make their bread, its just to sweet and sugary...

No they are a plain white bread bun, i know what you mean about the sugar in the bread. I had to buy a bread maker to get good bread. Salty bread they call it.

Cheers,

The best thing, IMHO, about Korean food is its many contrasts; cold and spicy, sweet and hot, savory, garlicky, and lots of different textures in the many relishes that are served at every table. While I love Korean food, and even though there are an abundance of Korean restaurants here in Chicago, I just don't get out to them enough.Enjoy yourself in Vegas.....:)

While in Thailand we had a lot of Tom Yum soup. Interesting to see how each restaurant has a slightly different recipe, or probably just slightly different quantities of the ingredients.

The group favourite thai food however was Thai Chicken Cashew, and was something we ordered for the table to share virtually every night

Tried taro and yam and some other things (they were vegetables I think) whilst I was in Vanuatu. Didn't like the taro or yam, but the two other vegetables (one was orange and one was purple) tasted alright with the coconut sauce on them.

Pad Thai is nice, McDonald's is brilliant, Fried Rice. But the CHinese take on Western food is the best - coconut milkshake and fruit (apples, watermelons) covered in mayo. Delicious.

Can't believe someones put "McDonald's is brilliant" - i'm with the Tom Yum group - I think Tom Yum Gung is my favourite - always remember to ask for it 'pet nit noy' (a little spicy) otherwise it can knock your head off!

I've had a similar raw fish on vinegar and coconut dish in Philippines and they call it "kilawin" if was nice and tasty. I think they adopted this dish from the japanese when japanese rule Philippines.

I like to try all the foods of the world :D so even the street food of singapore did'nt escape my curiousity, barbeque of everything.. it was great can't name of all them.

Of course when you say middle east.. you must not miss the tasty arabic "shawarma", a sandwich that is prepared the arab way.

in philippines, try adobo or longanissa- a small sausage cooked in a soy/vinegar sauce.

for dessert try halo-halo, basically crushed ice, fruits, icecream, coconuts.

fruit salad is not my thing, they corrupt it and it looks like coleslaw, the shred most the fruit and put a mayonaise kind of taste to it, although its mainly a condensed milk sauce.

halo-halo on summer, very refreshing! how can I ever forget about it when I use to finish 3 big cups of it under the hot sun.

the street halo-halo is good but if you're afraid to have stomach trouble, there is a food chain who serves halo-halo in the philippines at its best, look for "Chowking" because halo-halo there is great!

I've eaten unbelievable food all around the Oceana region but there's nothing like coming home and digging into a thick, sloppy pie floater - South Australia's national dish.

In case some of you guys have no clue what i'm talking about a P.F. is a wonderful delicacy that involves a meat pie, floating in pea soup, with tomato sauce on the top.

It's honestly better than sex. :o

BTW - When I was in Indonesia a few months ago I seen pie flavoured toothpaste on a supermarket shelf. I swear to god. Should have picked up a tube or two.

I would have to say Thai food is my favourite. I love eating at small, local restaurants when in Thailand, and even the street vendors have great dishes.

I love Greece cuisine, but gyros is my favorite.
In Serbia try cabbage rolls, they call that "sarma".

Hi Juli,

We will be in Colombia next year, can you give more details as to what la bandeja paisa actually is?
