Hi All
I am travelling throughout Europe next year and in October I want to go to Russia. After hearing a few bad experiences from other people I'm a little worried about going there. Has anyone traveled to Russia and can tell me what it was like. I will be going with an organised tour group rather than travelling myself
I will organize transfers to and from the hotel as I dont know how much English is spoken

thanks!

Hi Gando,

Welcome to ATF :)

There is a bit of detail about this here (http://www.aussietravellersforum.com.au/forums/showthread.php?t=256) and hopefully some other members can also help you out.

If safety is your worry then I'd recommend Poland, Czech and Slovakia. Most young university educated people speak English. It's cheap, great food, safer than Russia, friendly people all round and cheap skiing in Slovakia.

If I had my heart set on Russia, then I'd do it with a group tour - it will be much safer plus you get the bonus of meeting like-minded people doing exactly what you're doing. Check out some of the tours here (http://www.nothingbutadventure.com/tours.html).

If you are looking at other countries in eastern Europe then Dominic's suggestions are great choices.. however I would also add Hungary to that list.. I loved it there, plus it was extremely cheap.

I thing there is nothing to be warry about :) Eastern Europe is quite interesting and in fact it is true that for younger poeople speaking english is not a problem. Also it is very cheap in most of the countries except may be Greece but you will certainly enjoy your trip
