Hi all,
Im an avid beer lover myself, and while there are heaps of great brews here in Aus, I was wondering whats on peoples list for favourite beers.
We recently went to a tiny micro-brewery in Numea, the name escapes me (3 beirs or something like that), and had an awesome blonde there. Perfect balance with nice roasted barley. Yum!!
Also, have never been to America, but love Samuel Adams. Damn fine with a nice toffee aftertaste
Top 2 Australian beers for me:
Little Creatures Pale Ale
James Squire Pilsener

Hey Prawn,
Holy Sh!t, When I was your age and living in Perth, The great beer drinkers argument was whether Emu Bitter or Swan Lager was better... both taste like cat's piss now. Ughh!
The micro breweries are putting out bloody great product these days. You can go to to hundreds of little breweries you've never heard of and down a few delicious pints.
As you know, I a great fan of German wheat beer, but I've been working my way through the English Ales. I like Newcastle Brown, but a bit of a discovery is a Brewery called Badger. Completely different to wheat beers, but delicious. I've been doing my best to make sure they don't go broke during the recession. :D

I hear that Fursty Ferret is a pretty amazing beer by Badger. The only Badger beer i can get a hold of here is Golden Glory, but i havn't tried it yet.
Whats your recommendation?

Golden Glory is good. But I like them all. :)
Drink it only slightly chilled, just with the warmness taken off.... not icey.
This is the most recent one I've had... has a distinct gingery taste... yummy.

When I lived in Brisbane around 1991 ish I lived opposite a pub called the Story Bridge Hotel. Not sure how it got its name but it was under the Story Bridge.....
They had two major events each year, the Cockroach Races - where the street was closed and Wide World of Sports came to film it, and the National Festival of Beers. People from all round Australia would rock up and have a keg or two. I can't remember much so the story ends there .... :o

My problem is my income doesn't match my tastes, so i can't afford nice brews as often as i would like :(
I have to admit i havn't had a lot of wheat beers, but i am still undecided as to if i like them or not. It is certainly a distinctive flavour almost like a sweet tang, and it definitely lingers in the mouth for me.
What would you recommend trying for an 'easy drinking' wheat beer?

The one I used to buy in Oz was Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier. It's qyite cloudy and hoppy in taste which I like, but they make a Kristallweissbier as well which is filtered and clear... probably not so strong in taste.
If you like a more malty flavour, the Dunkelweissbier is good.
At $5 for a 500ml bottle over there, it's for special occasions.

I hate 330ml bottles. Pint bottles (or 500ml) or nuttin'! :p
At ~£1.65 for German or English beer in 500ml bottles at the supermarket is really cool. :D

Travelled all over Germany this year. There are something like 3000 breweries there. We made sure that we sampled bier in every town that we passed through. Bought a different bottle of bier everyday, for 8 weeks. Only found one that we didnt like. Love pils. Not crazy about the white bier, but I can drink it.
Loved the wine too. Had lots of that. Those Germans make great wein & bier.

Boutgh some beers after exams as a present to myself. Got Youngs Double Chocolate Stout.
It an English beer (wayne have you tried any other Youngs?) and is brewed with roasted malt for the coffee taste and then also has chocolate and cocoa powder in the brew.
It's nice, but im not a huge stout fan and the chocolate was more subtle that i thought it would be, although as the beer warmed up it came out a bit more. I prefer Chimay though for a dark beer.

Finally bought some Badger Fursty Ferret...
Hmmmmm not bad... very mellow to my pallet, would definitely buy again. But I still like the First Gold best.
Tonight we're of to the German Christmas Markets in Birmingham again to down some Deutchesbrot, Bratwurst und Weissbier. :D

At the moment im sipping the Weihenstephaner Pilsener. (wow i can image that gets harder to say and spell the more you have ;) )
Its a German beer, and has the distinctive German/European hops. Buts its very smooth and quite pale in colour. I would recommend it as a nice intro for people to European beers actually, its not too full on.

Didn't I say that those Germans make great bier?
No Prawn, it wasn't a drunken blur. Bier is sold in every milk bar and corner shop in Germany. You can legally drink bier at 16. They just have a different attitude to it.

Yeh i knew about the 16yo age limit. Same in Switzerland, where i have spent a bit of time. Its def just part of the social culture, not there to get trashed off of every time.
The thing that gets me with German beers is the hops. They are so distinctive, sometimes to the point of overpowering for me

About 10-15 years ago I use to brew my own beer in order to go after my picky needs + at the time I could make two cases of Stout for around $12 (USD). I use to belong to an informal "beer club" where we would all meet to share our latest batch, swap recipes and rate each others creations. A few of the people in our network went on to start their own microbrews---to think I use to hang out with them when we were poor basement brewers!
Generally when I travel I'll samples all of the local microbrews, most are about average while a few really shine. Locally I am a big fan of Harpoon and their UFO (unfiltered) beer--I just don't see the logic of taking out all of the vitamins during the filtering and brewing process. Sam Adams is well known around here (Boston) but IMO their hops suck.
Recently I've grown fond of mead, warmed on the stove it makes a great winter drink!

Hey ET,
I love Samuel Adams! Its pretty hard to get over here though. Their hops are good imo, almost a caramel flavour to it.
I have had mead a few times and its quiet nice too, had it for the first time at a silver service restaurant with my dessert and it went down a treat :)

The other night i had a Weihenstephaner Heffe Weissbeir (i think thats spelt right).
Its a wheat beer, and for me it was actually quite nice. Its less yeasty than a lot of the previous wheat beers i have tried. A good entry step into wheatbeers IMO, as they sure do have a distinctive taste.

but a bit of a discovery is a Brewery called Badger.
I managed to get my hands on some of Badger Fursty Ferret here in Adelaide. To me it wasnt as good as i thought it would be, but it was still nice. Very smooth and subtle, with a distinct sweetness well into the aftertaste. Very well rounded, but just doesnt suit my personal tastes. Would be great for someone who just likes a reasonably light/pale golden ale.

Tried a couple new brews over the weekend.
Lobethal Brewery Pilsner - A sweet Pilsner made with honey if you ask me. Very smooth and pleasant.
Off The Leash Pale Ale - Made by Brew Boys, who are the best local homebrew shop here in Adelaide. Again very smooth, but slightly bland too me, nothing much to it.
Humpback Pale Ale - Nice with a slight taste of roasted malt in the middle and a slight bitterness at the end.
Enterprise Brewery Knappstein Valley Reserve Larger - Brewed to be to beer what Savignion Blanc is to wine. Fairly sweet and i think there is some grapes that goes in with the brewing process, but makes for an ideal desert beer.
Little Elf Pilsner - My favourite of the lot. Very robust and a nice caramel kick to it.

In Sydney recently, had a Fat Yak Pale Ale. A Western Australian beer, from Matilda Bay region I think. Nice and smooth with a slight toffee taste.
Then at the Argyle had a Steigl Goldbrau. Wasnt expecting much from this one as im not normally a fan of German beers, but this was really light on the hops, not overpowering like a lot of other German beers. Would definitely recommend for those foraying into European beers, good entry level :)

Month of october is the beer festival for philippines. Local beer manufacturer "San Miguel Beer" sponsor many fantastic events. This is the best time to drink get drunk and party across the Philippine Island.
October BeerFest is a hell of a month long part everywhere. So if you are planning to drink a lot of beer on October... Philippines is a good destination.

strange how they sell the beers though, i buy it by the box. costs about 25p/bottle ($1=40p). you then return the empties and get 5p/bottle refund.

Am currently sipping on a Mildura Brewery Mallee Bull ale. Its their heaviest beer and has a hint of chocolate and the perfect amount of roasted malt to give a nice, subtle lingering toffee taste. Really well rounded amber/brown ale and good to see that the vics can actually make a decent beer. The fact that Mildura is so close to the SA border must be rubbing off on their beer making abilities ;)
A definite reccommendation from me, get your hands on some and try it! :)

Last night i tried a Velkopopovicky Kozel (try saying that when your drunk). I actually only bought it for the label which is a picture of a goat holding a stein. Its a Czech beer, with no english on the label. Turns out it is a fairly light lager (only 2 standard drinks per 500ml bottle). Still quite tasty though, and had a sweet after-taste, almost like bubblegum or something.
Would i buy again? Yes, but probably not for a while. Worth a try

Tried a few different ones yesterday.
Gage Roads Wahoo - This is Gage Roads 'champion' beer, having won quite a few awards lately. Its very easy to drink, and has some pretty cool labels/packaging. Taste wise there is nothing that stands out, just a nice drop.
Barons Lager and Pale Ale - Barons is another good micro brewery, but the surprise with these guys is that the beers only cost about $40 per carton. The Barons Lager was the crowd favourite of the day.
Blue Tongue Pilsener - Not a bad beer, but by the time i tried it i had already had a few others, so cant really comment on the flavours.

Sipping on a Czech beer called Zlatopramen. Picked it up randomly from Dan Murphys one day.

Knappstein is a really nice drop (Yes it's a beer made at a winery, go figure).
I would highly recommend it.
If you can find "Raging Bull" from the Bootleg Brewery is also another good drop (I became quite fond of it when we were over in Margaret River earlier this year)
"Arrogant Bastard Ale" & "Double Bastard Ale" from Stone Brewing have to definitely go on your bucket list.
I tried to include links to the breweries, but, it wouldn't let me.... I need to have 3 posts to my name before they'll allow me....

So I decided to be adventurous and recently tried a Belgian beer called Gueuze at the European Bier Cafe in Melbourne. I almost spat it out, the flavour tasted like a combination of sour cherries mixed with flat ginger soda distilled in an old lady's shoe.
Beer is usually the reason I get up in the morning and the reason I pass out at night but I think i'll stick with my old favourite (Coopers pale ale) from now on.
Oh, and bourbon.
And scotch.
Perhaps a tequila shot on the side...

Beer in China –Tsingdao. There is a beer factory in Shandong Province in the capital city called Qingdao. The factory was build by Germans as this area was under German occupation. The beer is sweet and strongish 4.5% and I must admit it does taste differently in different parts of China. Don’t know why!!!
Every year beer festival takes place in June and apparently its the biggest one in the world ( bigger then one in Germany)

Badgers Fursty Ferret - nice and fairly mellow beer. Hints of toffee, and like most english beers it gets more flavousome as it warms up. I would advise drinking it at about 10 degrees celcius to get all the flavours and aromas
Brew Dog Artisan Rebel Pilsener - Tasty drop from a Scottish brewery. Nothing outstanding, just a good solid pils

Well i've tried Stella Artois again, some time ago, and I must say the second time around it was much better. Must have been something wrong with the first one.
I tried several beers in the Czech Republic, all good....and cheap! Under $3 for a pint of good stuff. Pilsener Urqell, Budvar, Bernard, Master Tmavy, Krusovice (did I spell that right?). The Pilsener and the Budvar are the original Czech ones too (no crappy US Budweiser there - Budweiser being german for Budvar, which somehow the Americans have obtained rights to use the name). The Master Tmavy was 18 degree stuff (which is somewhere in the order of 7-8% alcohol).

I like a lot of Belgian beers. Especially this one made by St. Louis:
http://www.beerplanet.eu/catalog/images/beers-1/111101103-ST-LOUIS-KRIEK-PREMIUM-beer.jpg
It's a cherry flavoured beer, but unlike a lot of flavoured beers it doesn't taste like soda.
I like Canadian beer too, but not the major breweries so much. The microbreweries are good though.
Sleemans used to be a microbrew, but now it's really big and I think owned by one of the major companies (can't remember which one). They still maintain their spirit though and the honey brown lager is really good:

But my favourite is Granville Island Brewery. More local but great....if you're ever in Canada give it a try :)

I have had a few "mainstream" Canadian beers like Unibroue and i dont mind them, they seem to have taken a lot of lead from the Belgian styles also.

The west coast of Canada has some outstanding brews, worth coming here for them alone...although there are so many other reasons to visit as well. Stay well away from the big ones like Molson and Kokanee. Try some of the west coast style IPAs, really heavy in hops and alcohol (usually around 7-9%!) a serious beer. Also lots of really good wheat beers. If you find yourself in thirsty in Vancouver, try St Augustine's or The Alabi Room, lots of amazing micro breweries on tap.

Sounds great Jim, if/when we get over to Canada i'll make sure to check it out

Hofbraudunkelbier is worth trying if you ever visit Oktoberfest!
And for beer lovers visiting Amsterdam, check out the Heineken museum. It's like an educational Disneyland with free beer! Gotta love it.

Yeah definitely agree.

Yeah definitely agree.
+1 from me as well. Canada (especially West Coast) has really got the microbrewery figured out. Good quality, moderate price, and high availability.
