Hi all,

New member been signed up for a while but haven't posted yet. Thought I would finally say hi.

Most of the members involved with ASF will know me from there.

I have mainly travelled through Asia, due to having family ties in Singapore, and living in Darwin makes Asia quite cheap and accessable to travel to.

Might post some photos up at some stage.

Good work Prawn, hope you have as much success as Joe has had with ASF.

Hi, I'm Matt,

Currently live in Sydney, but have seen many parts of the world.

Been to Europe (France, England, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Holland, Germany and all those little ones like Vatican City, Monaco, Lichenstein, Belgium and probably more).

Asia, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong.

South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Isle of Pines, Vanuatu, New Caledonia.

Americas, only USA and Mexico.

Probably more but can't remember.

Anyways, most of my travelling is done now unfortunately, it's time to earn some money! But it's an experience I took two years of my life doing and will never regret it. Glad I did it. One of the best experiences of my life and something I feel everyone must do.

Next destinations one day: Africa (2010 World Cup) and South America.

Hi Charles, I work for a travel company in Peru, running trips through South America and I'm currently developing a brochure for DMC work. What's your connection with EcoTours? Operate south of Panama?

I own the site www.ecotours.me when the .ME domain extensions came out a few months ago I bought a ton of them (I collect domain names and sell them). The eco tour site was created as a way to record and publish my day to day travels or even walks in the woods. A couple of my friends are starting up an Eco Tour company in Jamaica so all of my Jamaica content on the site is from taking tours with them.

Hopefully as eco tours become more popular my site will be in a good place in the search engines and I can actually make some money from the site:) If you are interested in publishing something on my site let me know-no charge.

Hello,

I'm a 29 years old optimist guy in the business of the hotel industry. My profession is the online hotel booking service. I registered to this forum because I believe the relevant partners finding will be very easy here. Guys don't forget it, before you go to your next trip ask from me anything about the available hotels on your destination. I'll read and answer any E-mail or PM, however I'll ignore all spams.

p.s.: if you have a travel relevant site and you are on the spicypage please let me know ;)

Hi All,

New to this forum. I've have the benefit of having backpacked extensively as well as having lived in several different countries. In the UK at the moment but just in the final throws of getting our PR for Australia.

Was going to include a few links to our travel blog and photos page but the site won't let new users do this :-(

hi, great site.

Im Nathan, 30yo, Melbourne. Im married with 2 kids. My wife was born in Philippines. The last few years we have been planning/saving/investing for a early retirement.

The plan being that we could live above our current standard of living in Philippines for $20k/year. And i would never need to work again. So trying to get the cash up to generate that amount plus inflation, could do it now but not much of a buffer...Pretty much waiting patiently for 4years time when i will get long service leave and run.

I've travelled a fair bit locally through work, pretty much seen every country town in Victoria. No real highlights or must sees, obviously the great ocean road is good if you havent seen it. i enjoy stopping in small town pubs, the food quality and price can be amazing. i might have a flutter on the horses while im there.

I've also traveled interstate extensively. Always loved Tassie, nice forests, good wildlife, oceans, cold, but laid back and enjoyable. Prefered mode of transport is the boat ferrie from melb-tas. The journey is part of the adventure. 2hour flight too boring.

You guys probably know as much as me about queensland and nsw. i like the qld heat, especially my stay in townsville, does the body wonders. sydney seemed too hectic for me.

I will be going to the Hunter Valley in November for the first time(Polkington). Any advice on good value accomodation? Ive been looking and the weekend in particular is expensive. Would you recommend booking at last minute or well in advance for best prices?

International travels. Well, not surprisingly the Philippines features highly as the family destination of choice. We usually tack on a stop over somewhere to see another country. like by flying cathay pacific you can stop in hongkong and go to disneyland. or stop at singapore for some shopping. most the places we've been are asia, because its close, cheap fares and dirt cheap stay. also i just love the cultures.

ive been to europe, mainly london and scotland, its enjoyable, and they are different to australia in some ways(they are alot older/more heritage) but basically they are too similar to the australian landscape/culture. never interested me a great deal.

anyway look forward to reading up on everyones experiences,

cheers

G'day everyone.

My name's Ash, I turned 23 last Friday, love traveling and utterly despise ignorant tourists, haha. I'm from Adelaide, South Australia and i've travelled to various places in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. My long-term goal is to ultimately visit all 6 states and 2 territories in Oz and then it's off to explore the world!!!

Favourite Destination = Kangaroo Island

Dream Destination = Tokyo, Japan

Oh, and I aspire to be a travel writer. It would be the most awesome job in the world, I would think.

BTW - Nice site. I love the 'Green 'N' Gold'. :D

Hi everyone, I live in the South West Slopes area of N.S.W. With a little luck I hope to take my first overseas trip in 2010. I would like to go the the U.K. and spend app 2 weeks there exploring the places I would like to see. Then I would like to do a coach tour for app 21 days taking in Italy, Spain, France etc.
I would really love to hear from someone who has done a similar trip and could help with any suggestions, such as, packing, money/cards hostels/hotels, exploring London/Scotland by train verses bus.
I would be really grateful for any info.
Oh and by the way I am mature age (must be the only one on this forum).

Anyway, I will again introduce myself. I am Daisy aka Aimhigh from the Philippines and found this forum the other day while I was surfing. I think it was one of the signature in travel forum.

Hey everyone, i have caught the travelling bug!

A bit about me. My name is sam, 24 from the central coast NSW. Just got home from bali two days ago and i am already planning my next trip away. Been to bali once before and last year spent a month in cambodia doing volunteer work. Have completely fallen in love with asia, and plan to spend alot more time over there in the coming years.

But for now... My friend was in the Twice cancelled jetstar flight situation in phuket a few days ago, because of the media coverage and poor service he has been given jetstar vouchers for a few hundred dollars. this being our motovation we have decided to do a boys snow trip this july to christchurch.

We want to do it as cheap as possible, over about 4 days. I would like to be around the mt hutt area.

How much should i expect to spend? any places to reccomend staying?

cheers
sam

Hoping to teach English overseas within the next few years. A few friends have done it, sounds amazing.

G'day guys. The name's Chris and I'm a 26 (almost 27) year old Aussie guy currently living in working and Sydney. Headed to New Zealand and Fiji later in the year, and then back to South Korea for my third year of teaching English.

During 2011 I hope to add three or four more countries to my 'visited' list - those being Malaysia (for scuba), Thailand (to study for my CELTA), and either Mongolia or Japan (for shits and giggles).

Long term I want to continue traveling, blogging about it (I have a blog set up at www.aussieontheroad.com), and teaching until I accidentally knock some lucky girl up or my passion dries up.

Hopefully neither of those things happen to me anytime soon <_<

Hey, everyone, I am a Vietnam university student and I am graduating from our university next Septemper. I have learned English Education for my Bachelor's Degree. I'm thinking about studying in UK for my Master Degree and the subject TESOL and TEFL seem to be a good choice for me. However, I am not sure about which university is best for learning it in UK. Do you guys know some information about the universities? Your advice will be very heplful for my decision.

In addition, I feel that one year in UK is really short for one to get to know the culture and life of UK. I am thinking whether it's possibe for me find a job there. Do you think it is very difficult for a Chinese student like me? Furthermore, does the location or the city of the university is important for choose a university and get a job in UK? If yes, do you think where is the best choice?

so much questions about me, but because I am a little confused now.
Anyway, Thank you for reading my letters!

I'm doing my PhD in Cambridge, UK and recently went to Western Australia for a conference. I fell in love with the place! I am pretty laid back, love vegan food and tango dancing and nature.

You dont get much more laid back than Western Australia. Is the campus located in Geelong? as in the suburb of Geelong which is in Victoria?

What are you studying?

Also... new member just thought id say hi! currently looking for any and all info about travelling alone through Europe. Id love to be able to find work in the UK and use that as a base to travel, thats the plan. :)

hey all, i have done some googling and finally found a decent forum! ok so ill introduce myself. im 21 years old, 22 in april 2011. i have about 4 years of bartending up my sleeves, and just recently started some duty managing. i want to pack up and travel australia mid year, i havent got much planned, and i probably wont get a lot planned. just basics like where i WANT to go and stuff like that. would love for people to post as much info as they would like to share, im opened for everything at the moment.

one big question is, i dont plan on doing any serious 4x4ing, but would it be worth picking up something to do my trip and selling it once im back?

i plan to work in bars on my trip, i dont have a time limit and i basically am going to go from town to town, and move on depending how much i like the place or not.

i will be taking a tent and maybe a swag...but definately a tent, fishing rods will be a definate. my kayak is questionable atm, travelling on my own, not sure if i can leave it unattended as much as i think i wont be around it.

thanks everyone, im calling it a night but will be back on in the morning when i get up. happy new years to everyone, hope use had a good time..i worked all night!

thanks, Craig.

warrigal, I suggest that you check out the europe forum. However in answer to your questions, most European countries don't require visas for short visits (usually, 30, 60 or 90 days), there is usually at least one bus and/or train per day going to anywhere you care to visit and for cheapest flights I'd suggest using online booking sites or shop around your local travel agents for deals.

Hi, I am a new member and I am wondering if there is anyone who out there who has been on a 'Conservation Volunteers' holiday. I just read an article in the Escape section of the Sunday mail on the weekend and they said these type of holidays are becoming popular. They have the holidays in many countries but one that took my fancy was a Tasmanian one which goes down to a National park in Tibinbilla and you work along side the wildlife officers down there doing all sorts of different conservation activities. If you have done one of these types of trips I would love to hear from you.

Sorry, we jumped right in and began asking questions without introducing ourselves.

Margie and Rob are semi-retired baby boomers. We live in the outer east of Melbourne.

Margie has been to San Francisco, Las Vegas, Japan, Viet Nam, Cambodia and Singapore - traveling with her sisters.

Rob was in NZ for a week for a conference, back in the '80s. He drove like a Melbournian and managed to see about half of the North Island over two weekends.

We are "Rock Dancer" because Rock'n'Roll dancing is our special thing.

The big plan is to go to the UK in late August/September for a month or so. Rob must visit Edinburgh, Culloden and the Isles. And so we might as well also see selected bits of England, Wales and Ireland. And we figure a quick visit to Paris would knock over Europe Part 1 nicely.

At the moment we are up to our eyeballs in brochures and guide books.

We are definitely keen to hear suggestions and learn from the experiences of other Aussie travellers.

Thanks for having us! :D

This thread is for new members to introduce themselves, whether they are seasoned travellers or someone looking to start out on their first adventure.

Hi - I am a seasonal traveller - travelled to Europe, different islands, and within my own country, Australia.
All my husband I want to do now is travel - we have the bug!
We particularly loved Paris & London - if anyone has been there extensively please share with new ideas - we definitely will be going back as soon as we can. 'Know anything about places the locals go etc. or meeting the locals doing local things would be interesting! Would love to visit people in the country of France and see how they live.

Thanx
Jennyreg:) & Hubby

Try the mines over there - I live on the east Coast in Queensland but I know a few people who have gone over there to get work at the mines. Also travel in Perth is supposed to be a popular industry too.

We have had an interesting experience re refunds and we are trying to find out what options are available

The Background

Made arrangements through a travel agent (TA) to fly to Europe in August and return in December. All booked and paid for a month or so ago. The other day recieved a call from TA advising that as of the end of October the said airline would not be servicing Perth. Options provided were to:
1. return fom Europe before the end of October (shorten trip by 4+ weeks)
2. cancel the currently booked flight and book with another airline that would provide the required service.

Option 1 not an option due to committments and arrangements made for Europe .. so Option 2 another airline - slight inconveninece in itinerary matching arrangements in Europe plus a few more dollars but wearable on a tight budget.

TA advises that there would be a refund for the cancelled flights..Then comes the surprise.... would have to wait 8 to 12 weeks for the refund. In the meantime got to find the monies to pay for the new flight arrangements.

Questions:
1. Is this normal???? ie having to wait so long for a refund???
2. Have others experienced this (the duration of a refund) and if so is there something we can do about it. It does not seem quite right that due to an airline changing its scheduling that one is "out of pocket" for 8 to 12 weeks.

Would appreciate any comments or directions

Thanks in Advance

Derek

We travelled through WA for 18 months and we found work within one week. If you really want to work there is plenty there. Just at the local shopping centres you will see signs in shop windows. Once you start asking, someone always knows someone who is after workers. We believe it is the easiest state to get work in, whether it be mines, retail or office!

Log into jobsearch or mycareer and check it the job advertisements first before you get here!

I have traveled a bit, mainly in Canada, the States, Europe and Asia. Each place has its charms, whether its the people or the landscape.

The most recent place that blew me away was the Southwest of the US. What a place, Canyonlands, Arches, Monument Valley just incredible. And the Grand Canyon was huge and brutal for hiking. Would go back in a second, a huge part of the world with so many amazing parks to explore.

Hi All,
I have travelled extensively through Australia and internationally but in September 2012 I will be starting something big and I'll be asking for lots of advice on all kinds of Aussie travel topics.
The something big is a 26,600km walk around Australia called The Happy Walk for depression awareness and suicide prevention. At this stage I have to plan to walk with a cart and without road support although I hope to get some help along the way.
So if you have experience, knowledge or advise I'd love to hear from you.
Cheers

Hi Terra,

That sounds amazing. Do you have a website set-up for it? What stage of planning are you at? Do you know what route you are planning on? Do you need sponsors etc?

Hi Terra,

That sounds amazing. Do you have a website set-up for it? What stage of planning are you at? Do you know what route you are planning on? Do you need sponsors etc?

Thanks,

You can check out the campaign at www.thehappywalk.com. It's a very basic wix website because I have no idea how to make them but it has all the information there including an itinerary.

At the moment I'm starting a stamina training programme focusing on cardio and large muscle group resistance work. Also designing handouts and merchandise and writing the 3 main talks about mental health and support networking I'll present during the walk for corporate and community groups and senior school students. I have designed my cart but have not started building it yet, I need to consult with an engineer minded person and then find someone to help me put it together. And a bit of networking with mental health services, current campaigns and focus groups, writing sponsorship requests and researching depression and suicide in rural/remote Australia.

Last week I finished taking a 100+ hour virtual walk around Australia with Google Earth, Bonzle and Camps Australia Wide mapping out each day and each camp and noting water and food availability and, of course, the best places to take breaks to be a tourist. I'll be walking clockwise from Melbourne but doing Tassie first. There will be a lot of zigzagging because I want to get into remote communities without services, that's why it's not the usual 17-18,000km circuit.

The sponsorship side of it is a bit disheartening but every individual and group campaigning for all range of issues are hard put to find appropriate support these days and this style of campaign is considered high risk. Thankfully it is a very low budget campaign as I will be using my cart as a camper trailer. I'm in no rush and the right sponsors will come along at the right time so I'll keep sending out the requests and hope to get a bite.

I have 3 training walks lined up as awareness walks for suicide prevention:

Sydney Coast Happy Walk
approx 170kms
Otford to Barrenjoey Lighthouse
4-10th March 2012

Alice to Mt Sonder Happy Walk
approx 230kms
Alice Springs to Mt Sonder - Larapinta Trail
19-28th May 2012

Alps Happy Snowshoe Trek
approx 670kms
Tharwa - Walhalla - roughly following the Australian Alps Walking Track
1-31 July 2012

These walks are open for any experienced walker/trekker to join but they need to be totally self sufficient and always keep in mind the walks are for a cause not an ego trip.

So, I guess that gives you an idea of what it's all about.

:)
