Scotland is a country in northwest Europe that occupies the northern third of the island of Great Britain. It is part of the United Kingdom, and shares a land border to the south with England. It is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest. In addition to the mainland, Scotland consists of over 790 islands including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.

I went to Scotland when i was a young lad. Cant really remember much of it, but we stayed on a farm at a B&B or something and there was an old ruined castle about 200m away in the woods. As a young boy I thought that was the best thing ever and I can still picture what it looked like!

Anyone going to Scotland?

Get around the east coast north of Edinburgh... over the Firth of Forth to one of the resturants at either north or south Queensferry. Drive around the coastline up to St Andrews (the home of golf) and do not miss the craggy beauty of Ansthuthers - an old fishing village - in the middle of winter! Great stuff!

EDINBURGH is set in a spectacular landscape of volcanic hills and crags, dominated by its famous castle and decorated with the Gothic Royal Mile in the Old Town and elegant Georgian terraces of the New Town.
For years playing Cinderella to swinging Glasgow, Edinburgh has now become Scotland's coolest hangout

I was in Scotland for couple of weeks and believe me it is very beautiful. I have never seen a beautiful place like that in my life. If I get an opportunity I would definitely go there again.

Hi PCA,

Welcome to ATF :)

What were your highlights of Scotland? Did you go all around, or just a couple places? Keep sharing your experiences :)

I've been there once. And I won't go anymore.

It is very nice and original place - landscapes, kind and friendly people but the weather is just a pain! It is difficult to get some sunny or even normal with no rain days.
If you go anyway go to Isle of Skye, it was awsome and lots to do - hiking, cycling, boat trips, castles and wildlife to watch. Very enjoing.

True the weather can be a bit 'off'! I've never been right up in to the highlands - only to the border but it was very beautiful but very cold!

We spent 8 months in the UK last year and did a tour of Scotland during that time. We thought Scotland was fantastic and we had great weather, so must have been lucky in that regard.
We drove up from Cheshire along the M6 and stopped in Peebles for the first night, its a delightfull town 30 mins south of Edinburgh, and stayed in the second oldest pub in Scotland for 65 pounds a night for the two of us bed and breakfast.
Next day we drove into Edinburgh and toured the castle and Hollyrood palace before driving on to Perth, about 2 hours north, where we stayed the second night.
Third day after visiting the palace of Scone, where the kings of scotland were originally crowned on the stone of scone, we continued north to Inverness where we spent the next night. The pub scene in Inverness is great and we saw a live band and got talking to lots of locals who were keen to ask questions about Australia.
Next day saw us heading from Inverness along Loch ness into Fort William, and through Glen Coe, which is a fabulous mountainous region, and on to Stirling where we spent our last night.
Next day up early for a tour of Stirling castle and William Wallaces monument (Braveheart), then off past Glasgow and back onto the M6. We got off the M6 at the border for a detour along Hadrians wall and a look at a Roman fort before continuing south and back in cheshire before the pubs closed.
So that was it, 5 great days, very friendly people, seen heaps of places but will go back again to see all the places we missed ( the west coast and the Isle of Skye) and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in history.
We didn't book any accommodation in advance and found generally pubs were the best places to stay for B and B. Weather is pot luck, we went in September and it was beautiful.
Hope this answers a few questions.

A must in Scotland is to take in the heritage, castles and old buildings, if your there when the Tattoo is on thats quite spectacular. If you have time get out of the city and onto the moors, some spectacular walks and quaint as you meander through the hills avoiding the wandering sheep occasionally coming accross a country pub or inn where you would least expect it.

Is the weather really as everlastingly miserable as it's reported in the news?

Regardless, I quite like the Scots and I feel we have a lot in common with our tartan-skirt wearing mates. We love our rugby. We adore our beer. We hate the Poms. :p

some recommendation for serviced apartment in Edinburgh.

I use Pillowstops apartments. Not serviced daily, but immaculate at the beginning of the stay. Derek is very helpful and replies to emails promptly. I stay in the Royal Mile apartment, haven't stayed in the Grassmarket one.

I wanted to book for next month but I made my plans too late.

Whe I visited Scotland I decided to go off the beaten track... I decided to go for a 4 day weekend in a small little village called Braemar way up in the highlands. I flew into Aberdeen and got a coach into what seemed like the middle of no where.

You really get to see Scotland's beauty and charm out in these small villages, the people are friendly, the surroundings are beautiful and surreal and in this particular village (Braemar) they had walking trails through the highlands.

My advice to anyone visiting Scotland is at least take a day trip out to a town off the beaten track (I recommend somewhere in the highlands).. and you will see what I am talking about.
