Hey all, im heading off to Fiji soon, any recommendations?

I cant wait! the thought of sitting on the beach, watching the sunset, sipping a drink with a little umbrella in it is starting to get to me.

What are the girls like there? Im going to stay at a backpackers to improve my chances of finding someone my age

I havn't been to Fiji, but we recently went on a cruise to Vanuatu. The island itself seems very laid back, and the Melanysian (sp?) culture is very freindly. I assume Fiji is something similar.

Perfect water temp for diving too. ;)

'Will you have sex with me?' 'Ya, ya!'... :) The resort takes up practically the entire island. Range of accommodation. I stayed in the Grand Bure. Party every night. Awesome sun sets. Great snorkling right off the beach.

My favourite beach was Oarsman's Bay on the Island of Nakula in the Yasawas. Take a sea plane up there. It's much quieter than Beachcomber but the bay is absolutely spectacular. Perhaps the best I have seen in the world ...

Yeah I was looking at getting a seaplane somewhere, can I ask what company you went with and how much it cost?

I must admit, I overlooked Beachcomber, I thought it might have been a ripoff island (due to inconvenience of getting to the mainland).

These two places made my shortlist

Can't remember the plane company. I seem to remember there was only one. I booked it on Beachcomber. It flew in, landed in front of the resort and drove up to the beach to pick me up....awesome! :) Cost about $80 I think. I can't remember Beachcomber being any more expensive than other islands. I visited about 6 in the 4 weeks I was there, and it was definately the best fun.

Don't know either of the places you've mentioned.

Nadi Bay sounds like it is actually just out of Nadi, on the main island of Veti Levu (I think that's it) and NOT off the coast. It's better to stay either in the Mamanuca or Yassawa group of islands.

Have you already been there NS? Or going soon? Lots of crazy weather at the moment...

THOUSANDS of tourists, many of them Australians, have been warned to stay put in storm-ravaged Fiji as rising rivers threaten to burst their banks, triggering more flash flooding

FIJI has been removed from the flood disaster list and is urging Australians to come back to the holiday island.

Agree with Kennas it's way better to stay on an Island rather than on the mainland (which the coral coast is).
The mamanuca's have great islands and being the dry side of the chain they have good weather to get the Ya ya's out in the sun. Also the snorkeling off the islands is much better (you cant really snorkel many places off the mainland).

Almost bought a dive resort in Kadavu last year which is supposed to be the superior dive region but harder to get to. Was only about 500K which seemed like a bargain. If it wasn't for being stuck in Peru would have been there in a flash. Might be some cheaper resorts popping up soon, so have my eye out. Would be an OK life perhaps. :D

Give it a year, no-one will be going on holidays for a while yet. Too many people loosing jobs.

I couldnt stand it if I was the one managing the place. When in fiji my only worry should be whether my drink has too little pineapple jucie in it.

i wouldn't say that, for australian travellers Fiji is the place to go at the moment as it's cheap and trendy. people are still travelling, they're just looking for cheaper holidays, ie. Fiji and Bali.

Or, just staying at home?

Fijian president Ratu Josefa Iloilo abolishes constitution, sacks judiciary and assumes power
April 10, 2009
Article from: Australian Associated Press

FIJI'S president has fired the judiciary and assumed all power in a deteriorating political crisis in the troubled South Pacific nation.

President Ratu Josefa Iloilo has announced on a national radio broadcast today that he has abolished the constitution, assumed governance and rescinded all judicial appointments.

The move came a day after the country's second-highest court ruled that the removal of Laisenia Qarase and his ministers from government in a military coup in December 2006 was unlawful.

The ruling prompted armed forces chief Commodore Frank Bainimarama to step down from his post as self-appointed prime minister.

President Iloilo, who swore Bainimarama in two years ago, said he would appoint an interim prime minister soon.

The president also said that Fiji will hold elections in 2014.

“I hereby confirm I have abrogated the 1997 constitution and appointed myself as head of state in the new order,'' Iloilo said in the address.

Under the constitution, Fiji's president has a mostly ceremonial role as head of state and governing power is held by an elected prime minister and cabinet.

yep... you don't need to tell us you've been in the army most of your life...On top of the GEC the pig flu is all bad news for the industry.

The root cause of the Fiji problem is actually with the British and the import of Indian Labour some years ago. Have you read about that?

It puts Fijian politics into perspective.

try and get to the Yasawa Islands. One of the most magical places I have ever been. Blue, blue water, powdery white sands and wide smiles on the people I meyt there.

Hi all,
Im looking at spending 5 nights at one of the south pacific islands in the next 2 weeks and was quite keen on Fiji but have noticed a few issues lately. ie the Australian and New Zealand High Commissioners have been expelled from Fiji.
What are the risks going to Nadi and the coral coast? I would keep away from Suva.

Hi Dan,

Im not sure what the official gov advice on travel to Fiji is, but you need to consider the fact that the curent 'president' took over in a military coup, so it is politically unstable. How that translates to everyday life though im not sure...

I reckon it would be alright off Nadi, but check the Gov warnings.

The mood seemed relatively low-key and peaceful when I was in Fiji earlier this month. I think this is simply another situation of the media making a mountain out of a molehill.

I will tell you guys one thing though - they are the most beautiful group of tropical islands known to man. The bungalow I stayed in was awesome but alas, there were no monkey butlers waiting on me hand and foot.

Oh, and death to humidity.

I'm headed to Fiji at the end of this year for a 15 day post break-up tour. My soon-to-be ex-girlfriend and I are spending New Year's at Robinson Crusoe and saying our goodbyes on the 2nd of January when she heads back to the US.

Then I've got 5 nights at Mango Bay, 3 nights at Manta Ray, and 3 nights at Waya Lailai with my brothers and a mate of mine.

Any suggestions on things to do in those areas? I'll have cash and nothing but time. I'm PADI certified and eager to do some more scuba, but also out to try and do as much active stuff as possible so I'm not sitting around moping :-p

Also keen to do plenty of drinking. Contemplated Beachcomber, but they're too damn pricey for a massive dorm and the smell of vomit.

Hey CW,

The mag i read recommended Viti Levu for diving in Fiji. Has a massive shark hole there and they do controlled feeds a couple times a week if you fancy diving with Tiger and Bull sharks. Otherwise Manta Reef and Kadavu is full of matra rays which may be a little less intense.

Be sure to report back to us as to how you went!

Would be a nice place to go after the ex disappears. Party every night. Plenty of ya yas there, and for some reason Israeli girls with amazing breasts.

You should try to go to a local village. When I was there I went on this tour I think it was called Sigatoka river safari and it was booked through the resort I was staying at which was the Shangrila Fijian resort on the Coral Coast. That went up the river in a jetboat past a lot of local villages and then went to an actual village where an enormous lunch was prepared with the villagers and it was a really nice experience.

If you went up to Pacific Harbour you can do heaps of activities like the Zipline. The guy who runs that is some American who was talking about doing one around Nadi area which would be a lot more convenient for the regular tourists who don't go for hours around the island. Pacific Harbour is the adrenalin capital of Fiji so if you want to have some fun that is a great place but it all comes at a cost.

Other than that you should make sure you are at one of the decent properties when they have a fire show on as that is really amazing to watch.

Other than that snorkeling can be great out on some of the island resorts and relaxing on the beach. I thought Beachcomber was very over-rated and way over priced for what you get. If you want party atmosphere all the time it is great but if you don't want to be in bed half the day to party all night long then another island would be a much better option.
