Hey ATF,

Next year I'm going to be setting off on a 'round the world trip, starting in Japan and moving through South Korea and China before heading off to Europe.

What advice would you give to someone like me- a novice traveller with no experience with travelling solo in Asia?

How long should I stay in each country to fully experience the respective attractions?

What languages will I realistically have to learn to get by?

Will winter be too cold in certain parts?

Thankyou.

Hi jack,

Welcome to ATF. Make sure you check out each country thread that you intend to visit as there should be a lot more detail there (particularly the South Korea thread as i have been there)

Realistically you could get by with English in every country except for parts of China and South Korea.

And yes, the further north you go, the colder it will get.

That's good to know, I suppose I'll just learn some basic Korean and Standard Mandarin before I head off, while avoiding the north of China. I read that it can drop to -30 during winter- that wouldn't be very pleasant. Experiencing the countries in winter will be aesthetically awesome, but I draw the line at -10.

Don't worry about trying to tick off a big list of attractions. Don't rush and take the time to enjoy the local culture.

Thanks for the advice. I'm thinking of spending 2 weeks in Japan and 12 days in China. I don't think I'll go to South Korea. Does that sound good?
