Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a constitutional monarchy in Northern Europe that occupies the western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula, stretching from its northern extremity to its southern one. The majority of the country shares a border to the southeast with Sweden; its northern region is bordered by Finland to the south and Russia to the east. The United Kingdom and the Faroe Islands lie to its west across the North Sea, and Denmark lies south of its southern tip across the Skagerrak Strait. Norway's extensive coastline, facing the North Atlantic Ocean, is home to its famous fjords.

The Fjords are incredible. Probably best seen in Autumn where you have snow on the plateaus and everything between green and red in the forests lower. Best city is Bergen which Is far more traditional than modern Oslo. If you go to Oslo make sure to see the Opera house at night.
Gaeranger fjord is fantastic, but generally all the Fjords around Bergen are breathtaking. Best tip is to stay in bed and breakfasts or small lodgings in Small villages outside of major cities, they are cheaper and more scenic. one in particular i can recommend is called Undredal, which is right near Flåm.
If you have a bit of time and money (because it is phenominally expensive in Norway) Narvik in the North is scenic and the Northern lights are spectacular in Winter the further north you go.

we are thinking of going on a cruise along the coast of Norway to visit the fjords. Has anyone done this and was it worth the expense?

Hi,
What is the best season to visit Norway? How many days do you think it is enough?

Summer certainly. take a cruise to be in many places for a short time. You don' need to look for a luxury ship. There are plenty 3 star ship sailing in Norwegian fjords throughout the summer.

Haven't done a cruise but took a boat from the mainland to the Lofoten Islands, which wasn't too expensive and was great. Camped on the island for a few days, very beautiful area.
